Assam is the largest of the seven sister states of north-east India and is known for its tea production, oil fields and rich biodiversity. The geographical area of the state spans 78,550 sq km, and 36 per cent of the land is under forest cover. These forests house five national parks and 18 wildlife sanctuaries, and are rich in commercially viable products like bamboo and timber.
Assam's economy is primarily agrarian, and over half the labour force is dependent on agriculture. It is an industrially backward state, and the sectors that provide employment are tea, oil & natural gas and tourism. Digboi in Assam is considered to be the birthplace of the country's oil industry. The oil refinery in Digboi was commissioned in 1901 and is one of the oldest in the world.
The state has witnessed large scale migration of people from Bangladesh as a result of the wars on the eastern front. These refugees now have become integrated with the local population. Sporadic incidents of violent attacks by separatist groups have hampered the growth of the state.
